How a radio code request works

This page shows where to find the serial number, how to send the request and how to enter the code at the end. Follow the steps in order and you avoid the most common mistakes.

Entering the radio code with preset buttons 1 to 4
Label on the radio housing with the serial number, prefix highlighted
This is what the label looks like. The highlighted prefix shows the brand.

Why does the radio ask for a code?

Many car radios have anti-theft protection. When the power is cut, for example after a battery change, a repair or when the radio is removed, the unit locks itself. The display then shows SAFE, CODE or LOCKED. The radio only works again with the right code.

Where is the serial number?

On the display

Some units can show the serial number on the display, often with a key combination. It differs by model.

On the label on the radio

Usually the number is on a sticker on the side or top of the casing. The radio has to come out of the dash for that. Many VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat and Ford units need the right removal keys. If you are unsure, let a garage do it.

In the car documents

Radio code card, radio pass, Opel Car Pass or service book. Sometimes the code itself is there, sometimes only the serial.

Common prefixes

The part number is not the serial number. On VAG units the part number starts with digits, the serial with three letters.

Sending the request

  1. Pick the brand, the model is optional.
  2. Enter the serial exactly as it is printed on the label.
  3. Add your email address.
  4. Accept the terms and confirm you own the vehicle.
  5. Send. Our team checks the request and emails you the code. Timing can vary.

Entering the code

Most units use the preset buttons 1 to 4. Each button stands for one digit of the code, pressing it again raises the number. You confirm with an arrow key, OK or a long press depending on the unit. Touchscreen units show a number pad.

SAFE, WAIT and wrong entries

After a wrong code the radio locks for a while. The display shows SAFE, WAIT or a clock. On many units the lock only counts down with the ignition on. The wait depends on the unit and can get longer after each failed try. So do not guess codes like 0000 or 1234.

If the code does not work

Check the serial number first, above all 0 and O, 8 and B, 1 and I. If it is correct, write to service@radiocodeglobal.de. If the radio was ever swapped, the number in the documents may belong to a different unit.
